What is it about?

The city of Maputo is a literary palimpsest in Mozambican literature starting from the 50s and the 60s. In its literary images readers will find a welcoming as well as a hostile space, depending on who and when is writing. Three moments can be discovered as crucial in this process: the colonial period, with Noémia de Sousa's verses, the independence period, with writings like João Paulo Borges Coelho's works, and contemporary novels and tales, where the city is strongly marked as a dystopic space.
