What is it about?

The relationship between stories and illustrations in medieval French manuscripts. This case study is taken from the "Vie des Peres", an important and well known collection of pious tales. The stories chosen are short but exciting and related. The article considers who took illustrative decisions, and why.

Why is it important?

Important questions are asked that might be answered by an innovative methodology. Fundamentally, it asks: what did the medieval reader think of the stories they enjoyed? This question cannot be answered using traditional methods.

Perspectives

This article is important since it is a modest but important "pointer" for other scholars (and myself). I use a little studied but widely admired text, apply a creative methodology, and attempt to ask a fundamental question. More work along this line was to follow, but even now much remains to be explored.
