What is it about?

This article tries to answer the question: what tasks work best for beginner-level kids in online one-to-one classes. In the article, we look at four tasks. These tasks get used by 19 pairs of teachers and students in their regular classes (no laboratory conditions!). We then look at the interactions between the teachers and students using these tasks and draw conclusions about which tasks work best and why.

Why is it important?

More and more classes are being taught online. For these to be effective it's vital that teachers and materials designers understand how tasks work, and which kinds of tasks result in the most learning.

Perspectives

I hope this paper can help teachers understand more about the interaction they have in their online classes. I also hope it can point materials writers in the right direction for designing more effective tasks for this context.
