What is it about?
Many who learn French struggle to grasp the subjunctive mood. In order to understand the subjunctive’s behaviour prior to widespread prescriptivist efforts, the study explores the subjunctive in 16th-17th century French letters, which may help shed light on linguistic usage beyond grammatical prescription.
