What is it about?

Wahlin's CHaSSMM model is a useful approach in the design of pediatric health education materials as it reveals underlying power structures and encourages the designer of the materials to explore and evaluate all possible interpretations of the design content. This paper explains how CHaSSMM can provide support for the planning and interpretive stages of design projects.

Why is it important?

This CHaSSMM Model provides a practice-led framework for interpretation within design. This paper explores its use in paediatric health, which often involves a complex range of stakeholders, data and project-specific aims.

Perspectives

I have been developing and testing the CHaSSMM Model throughout my doctoral research, which has focused on the design of ‘difficult’ exhibitions (exhibits that focus on topics such as war, genocide, gender violence, contested histories or death). In this paper, Paulovich and I have applied CHaSSMM to paediatric design, where it can play an important role in revealing underlying power structures, as well as provide support for the interpretive stages of design. I have found CHaSSMM not only shapes project research, leading to a better understand of project aims and issues of representation, but Is also a useful tool for articulating tacit understanding, fostering a critical distance to self in practice.
