Why is it important?

With an increase in the use of emojis and other forms of visual shorthand in texting and advertising, there should be a critical look at in the best way to compress images for maximum legibility at a tiny size. Many examples shown here illustrate this.

Perspectives

After publication in the Information Design Journal, I published the article as a stand-alone pamphlet, with added illustrations and text. Although it originally appeared in 2002, I still get requests for this little booklet, and I feel that the ideas and arguments hold up today.
