The article describes how a study of variation in spatial language was carried out in a mixed method style and analysed from a Conceptual Metaphor Theory vantage point.

Why is it important?
We are still in the early days of describing conceptual variation. This article takes this as an opportunity to describe a mixed methods approach to answering questions about spatial language variation.
Perspectives
I think that a lot of English spatial language has been approached from an instinctual perspective. I also think that when we scratch the surface, varieties of English show some fascinating ways of describing space. That's why I started looking at spatial language in Irish English, and it now seems to me that there should be variation in spatial language in all sorts of varieties of English around the world. Writing this article gave me the opportunity to show others how I did my study and offer a path for other researchers to apply these methods to the varieties of English that they study.
