What is it about?

This is an analysis of the syntax of verb-second constructions in German and Yiddish.

Why is it important?

My findings strengthen the arguments for an asymmetry in verb-second clauses first observed by Travis's 1984 dissertation, and argued extensively by J. W. Zwart for Dutch.

Perspectives

Yiddish, as a verb-second West Germanic language, provides further evidence that West Germanic has more than one verb position in finite, V-2 clauses. This way of analyzing West Germanic allows for a better derivational approach to its syntax and is better able to account for all the properties of the West Germanic verb-second property.
