What is it about?
In this volume, we study what makes up the ability to use second or foreign language well. We examine the relationship between four language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) and key variables that support these skills.

Why is it important?
By reviewing a large body of research on second/foreign language reading, writing, listening, and speaking, we have shown that linguistic knowledge (e.g., vocabulary, grammar) consistently plays an important role compared to cognitive, affective, or conative variables.
Perspectives
Completing this edited volume with each L2 skill area experts was a wonderful learning experience. While caution is needed as readers consume large-scale, broad-stroke meta-analyses such as the ones included in this volume, we hope that our volume will help language teachers, testers, and researchers by providing a bird’s eye view of decades of research on second/foreign language proficiency.
