What is it about?

Many autistic people find it difficult to understand speech in noisy environments, such as busy workplaces, social events, or public spaces. These listening difficulties can affect well-being, social relationships, and access to opportunities. However, autistic people often report receiving little professional advice on how to manage these challenges and instead develop their own coping strategies through trial and error. This lack of clinical support seems to be partly due to a gap in dedicated research. This project was initially designed by a team of autistic and non-autistic researchers working in collaboration. The project aimed to investigate the listening strategies used by autistic adults and understand the advantages and disadvantages of these approaches. The study involved 65 autistic adults who completed an online survey about how they manage difficult listening situations. Some participants also took part in follow-up email interviews, which allowed them to discuss their experiences in more detail without the pressures of face-to-face interviews. Researchers identified 91 different strategies, which were grouped into six main areas: changing the listening environment, telling others about their listening differences, asking for adjustments, using mental strategies, technology, and visual information. Most participants found their strategies to be ‘quite’ or ‘very’ helpful, although some also reported drawbacks, such as extra effort or fatigue. Importantly, nearly all of these strategies had been developed independently rather than with professional support. The findings show that autistic adults have valuable knowledge about managing challenging listening environments and are willing to share their experiences. These user-developed strategies could help inform practical guidance for both autistic people and clinicians. The study highlights the need for personalised, community-informed support that respects autistic individuals’ experiences and highlights the relative risks of employing masking behaviours. Overall, the research emphasises the importance of a person-centred approach to supporting listening difficulties in autism.

By identifying and evaluating these real-world strategies, the study provides valuable insights into what helps autistic adults manage difficult listening situations and what might be the relative costs to the individual. The findings can inform the development of practical, evidence-based support and resources for both autistic people and clinicians. Ultimately, the research promotes more personalised, effective, and community-informed approaches to addressing listening challenges in autism.

Perspectives

This was an interesting project to be involved in, because it explored an important but often overlooked challenge faced by many autistic people: understanding speech in noisy environments. The study was particularly valuable because it was co-designed with the autistic community, ensuring that autistic voices and lived experiences shaped the research from beginning through to publication. It also revealed a wide range of creative, self-developed strategies that people use in everyday life, highlighting practical knowledge that has has the capacity to shape clinical practice going forwards.
