What is it about?
When we listen to someone speak, we understand not only the words but also their emotions—happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, fear, or surprise. This ability to convey emotion through voice is crucial for human communication. But how does this work in a tonal language like Cantonese, where the pitch of a syllable changes its meaning entirely? The acoustic mechanics behind this have long been a puzzle. Our study aimed to solve it.

Why is it important?
Our research is the first to show that Cantonese speakers primarily use spectral features rather than pitch to express emotion, which is the opposite of what is seen in non-tonal languages. This insight is essential for designing more accurate emotion-recognition AI and hearing aids for tonal language speakers, and it opens new therapeutic pathways for individuals with autism, Alzheimer's, or hearing loss.
