What is it about?

Those CI users who were implanted before 4 years of age did better at producing the question intonation contour than those CI users implanted after 4 years of age, but not as well as the typical hearing control group. However, in other aspects of question intonation, such as phrase final lengthening, all CI users did poorly - no matter how early they were implanted.

Why is it important?

This study suggests that early implantation of a cochlear implant device may lead to better spoken language outcomes in the area of speech prosody later in life.

Perspectives

It is hoped that this study will generate further research in the area of speech production skills of Cochlear implant users, especially looking into treatment approaches to see if treatment targeting speech prosody my lead to even greater improvements in speech prosody skills in cochlear implant users.
