Why is it important?

The chapter sets the stage for later chapters that suggest ways to respect Indigenous peoples human, land, environmental, and other rights under the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. While I note that Global Watch reported that 2016 was the highest rate of the confirmed murder of Indigenous and land rights activists, Global Watch reports that 2017 murder rates exceeded 2016 levels. It continues to be an international human rights disaster that continues to unfold.
