What is it about?

Open pollinated maize varieties are still grouped under very important category and heterosis and heterotic grouping is also very important in maize hybrid development. There was knowledge gap in determing the heterotic group of the 19 OPVs which limited the breeding program from exploiting the maximum genetic potential of these OPVs.

Why is it important?

We have determine the heteotic group of the OPVs for the first time in Uganda. We used 19 maize OPVs and two testers ( Tester A and B). From our study, 3 and 2 OPVs were grouped to heterotic group A and B respectively.

Perspectives

Developing this article to get published was a great pleasure as it has authors with whom I have had long stay during my MSc study. This article also can be used as reference to those of post graduate students and ultimately to a greater involvement in maize hybrid and inbreed line development.
