What is it about?
Tomato is a very nutritious indigenous fruit vegetable but it is also highly perishable. Ripe tomatoes are perishable, therefore they can be damaged easily during harvesting and shipping and this leads to loss of quality and exhibiting a short shelf life. The delay of ripening is of a great economic importance because of a large annual loss due to spoilage. . 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), the synthetic gaseous compound is found recently to be a good antagonist ethylene compound, is being used to extend the shelf life of fresh produce by controlling ripening related changes such as dramatic changes in texture, colour, flavor, pH and aroma of the fruit flesh and over-ripening.

Why is it important?
Currently, 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment process involves its continuous exposure in a controlled room environment for several hours, allowing the 1-MCP to bind to the ethylene receptors on the plant cell, resulting in inhibition of ethylene action and delayed ripening . The results of this research confirmed that the uses of 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) have commercial potential for growers and traders to delay the ripening of green tomatoes.
