Why is it important?
Despite the findings of numerous studies showing that socioeconomic factors contribute significantly to the incidence/prevalence of malaria, current malaria control programs in Nigeria and even globally have remained based on approaches such as health education, provision of insecticide treated nets, early detection and treatment with artemisinin-based combination therapy including intermittent preventive treatment of pregnant women. These are all important but sadly, adequate attention has not been paid to socioeconomic factors that have been noted as being crucial to the persistence of malaria and in fact, to its rising incidence/prevalence thus, accounting for the ‘failure’ of the existing interventions.
