Evaluation of Occupational Lead Exposure in Informal Work Environment in Kenya

What is it about?

Lead is widely used in industries such as in production of lead bullets, lead-acid battery manufacturing, refinery. paint and pigment manufacturing . However, it is extremely harmful to human health and the environment. In highly industrialized countries, strict controls and improvements in industrial methods have assisted to ensure that occupational lead poisoning is less prevalent. On the contrary, in developing countries, it remains a problem of huge dimensions especially in the informal sector. Previous research has shown that the informal sector workers had elevated blood lead levels which was attributed to airborne lead exposure. This study was cosequently designed to evaluate the occupational exposure to airborne lead in the informal sector

Why is it important?

Our study shows the level of exposure to airborne lead to informal sector workers and recommends measures to be taken to prevent exposure.
