What is it about?

This systematic review and meta-analysis implies a significant relationship between oral Fusobacterium nucleatum bacterial species and their role in female-specific breast cancer pathogenesis. Breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide with an ever increasing incidence and is more likely to affect post-pubertal females from all racial and ethnic backgrounds. Recent findings of oral Fusobacterium nucleatum species in cancerous human breast tissue have highlighted the importance of microbes in the pathogenesis of cancer.

Why is it important?

The risk of breast cancer development increased with significant levels of oral Fusobacterium nucleatum bacterial load due to gingivitis/ periodontitis, thus elevating their biomarker potentiality for female specific breast cancer. Our findings increase understanding of the complexities of this relationship with regard to adult female populations and may be able to lower/prevent the risk of breast cancer development globally, fundamentally altering the course of both medical and dental prognostics.

Perspectives

The sole purpose of our team is for our investigation to assist in strengthening and deepening current understanding of this vital topic, with promotion of further investigations and international collaborations between researchers and healthcare professionals from all specialities worldwide.
