What is it about?
This paper is about the organization, supply chain and logistics of the Ottoman army between 1300-1566. Research suggests that the Ottomans’ success depended to a large extent on their ability to amply supply provisions and weapons to their soldiers (i.e. supply chain and logistics). They also provided plentiful food for their animals which served as the primary means of transport. Why is it important?
There is very little research on the supply and logistics systems of armies of countries during the Middle Ages. This paper bridges the disciplines of military history and supply chain and logistics management by analyzing the efficiency of the Ottoman Army supply chain, an often overlooked but crucial factor behind the Ottoman imperial success. This work fills a historical research gap and also offers a compelling case study for scholars in operations research and strategic planning.
Perspectives
This paper added material that did not appear in the original like the structure of the Ottoman Empire, its decision making process, and components of its military structure as it relates to war and conquest.
