What is it about?

Coastal lagoons are fragile yet vital ecosystems that support both nature and livelihoods. This study highlights how nano-knowledge, the smallest units of ecological and local wisdom from daily life, traditions, and lived experiences, can transform water governance when combined with science and policy. Too often, policies rely solely on standardised scientific methods, neglecting local environmental realities, which leads to unsustainable practices and lagoon degradation. Research across four lagoon communities in Ghana and West Africa engaged 446 stakeholders through interviews, surveys, observations, and scientific water analyses. Results revealed alarming water quality issues: excessive salinity, chloride, sodium, and potassium, low dissolved oxygen, and high faecal contamination. Macroinvertebrate assessments confirmed severe ecological decline, especially in Sakumo I and Mokwe Lagoons. These conditions are worsened by weak governance, limited data use, and neglect of traditional conservation practices. Theoretical insights from Social Cognitive Theory, Evolutionary Governance Theory, and Socio-Hydrological Framework show how human behaviour, governance systems, and ecological resilience are interconnected. The study also found that education alone does not drive sound decisions—ethnicity, religion, and community ties strongly shape environmental care. To restore lagoons, governance must be holistic, multidisciplinary, and participatory. By blending traditional wisdom with scientific research, empowering communities, and implementing effective policies, societies can strike a balance between development and ecological preservation, thereby building lasting resilience.

Why is it important?

We advance global wetland governance by integrating science and culture, exposing gaps between formal policies and local practices, proposing co-managed governance frameworks, offering a replicable model for Africa and beyond, while supporting UN goals on clean water and ecosystem conservation. This study is globally important because lagoons are fragile ecosystems found all over the world, and findings show that they are under pressure from pollution, land use, and poor governance. By showing how nano-knowledge, the smallest pieces of local wisdom, everyday observations, and traditional practices, which can be combined with scientific research, the study offers a fresh way to protect water resources. It proves that top-down policies alone are not enough; real solutions must include the voices and experiences of local communities who live with these ecosystems daily.

Perspectives

Conducting this multidisciplinary project was interesting as it bridges different areas of lagoon studies. The findings from Ghana help reveal the risks of ignoring local knowledge: polluted waters, declining fish populations, and damaged ecosystems that threaten both livelihoods and biodiversity. But the lessons go beyond Ghana. The approach, blending science, community input, and policy, can be applied anywhere in the world where people depend on wetlands, rivers, and lagoons. By connecting local practices to global goals like the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals on clean water and life on land, the study provides a model for more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable governance. In short, it reminds the world that protecting water is not just about science and technology, it’s about people, culture, and the small, everyday knowledge that helps ecosystems survive.
