What is it about?
The work tried to explore signs and symptoms of Influenza-like Illnesses that could be most associated with confirmed influenza laboratory results. The study considered the sensitivity, specificity, Positive Predictive Value and Negative Predictive values of a combination of signs and symptoms. The odds ratio of various relationships were also examined for any clinically plausible associations.

Why is it important?
For a clinician working in a resource constraint setting, one may like to find out what signs and symptoms to look out for among the host of acute respiratory infections that may likely be due to influenza.
Perspectives
For surveillance purposes, standard case definitions are used. That for acute respiratory infections (Influenza-Like Illnesses in this case) looks out for fever and cough first before considering other respiratory signs or symptoms. This study brought to the fore the importance of sore throat being observed with fever and cough as highly predictive of an influenza infection. I hope this will encourage similar studies under different settings to explore how comparable the findings may be.
