What is it about?

Women’s participation in politics constitutes a vital pillar of social empowerment and the national development process. The present study seeks to examine the nature of rural women’s participation and their performance in grassroots democracy, with specific reference to the provisions of the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) Act.

Why is it important?

Research on women’s participation in Panchayati Raj Institutions has largely remained confined to certain unexplored or grey areas. The present study attempts to bridge this research gap. Moreover, studies assessing the performance of women in local governance based on the provisions of the PRI system are relatively scarce, and none have specifically focused on comparing caste and political performance in Panchayats. These aspects constitute the distinctive and original contributions of the present research.

Perspectives

Researching rural women and their roles in local governance is particularly significant for understanding their participation in these domains. Throughout the study, the findings provide insights and address several key research questions related to women’s political empowerment.
