What is it about?
Premature babies are born before their bodies have fully developed and therefore have special nutritional needs. Providing the right nutrition during the early days and weeks of life is essential to support healthy growth, brain development, immune function, and long-term health outcomes. This publication explores evidence-based nutritional strategies used in neonatal care to optimize the growth and development of preterm infants. It discusses the importance of human milk, breast milk fortification, appropriate protein and energy intake, micronutrient supplementation, and individualized nutritional approaches according to each infant’s clinical condition and developmental stage. The work also highlights the challenges faced by healthcare professionals in achieving adequate nutrition while minimizing complications associated with prematurity. By translating current scientific evidence into practical neonatal care strategies, this publication aims to support clinicians in providing the best possible nutritional care for vulnerable premature infants worldwide.

Why is it important?
Despite major advances in neonatal intensive care, growth restriction and nutritional deficits remain common challenges among preterm infants. Early and optimized nutrition plays a critical role in improving survival, supporting neurodevelopment, and reducing the risk of both short-term and long-term complications. This publication is important because it brings together current evidence and practical strategies for neonatal nutrition, emphasizing individualized care, human milk–based feeding practices, and balanced nutrient delivery. The knowledge presented may help neonatologists, pediatricians, nurses, dietitians, and other neonatal healthcare professionals improve nutritional practices and outcomes for premature infants across diverse healthcare settings.
Perspectives
As a pediatrician and neonatologist, I have observed that optimal nutrition is one of the most powerful interventions available to improve the survival and lifelong health of preterm infants. Nutrition during this critical period influences not only physical growth but also brain development and future well-being. My motivation for writing this publication was to bridge the gap between rapidly evolving nutritional science and everyday neonatal practice. I hope this work encourages evidence-based feeding strategies, promotes individualized nutritional care, and supports healthcare professionals worldwide in their commitment to giving every premature infant the strongest possible start in life.
