This article examines a hitherto unpublished early draft originally written in Latin. Via clusters of citations and common lines of argument, a historic link is established with Grotius' "Commentary on the Law of Prize and Booty?"

Grotius was mulling over the question whether it was possible to forge alliances of war with non-Christians. This was technically forbidden by Canon Law.
