What is it about?

This paper considered a new survey instrument for measuring students' sense of belonging related to language learning, overall finding that this survey was both valid and reliable. We also found that students' perceptions of their own feelings of belonging are complex and cannot be summarized as being only about isolation nor about feeling like they had a close community in learning French. When we considered whether students tell others about their learning of French, the results again showed complexity with students neither asserting exclusively pride nor exclusively shame.

Why is it important?

This paper is important because it provides researchers with a valid and reliable way of investigating sense of belonging in language learning, which, in other papers has been shown to be critical for motivation to learn a language.
