What is it about?
By analyzing three translations (into English, Catalan and Spanish) of Chun Sue’s Beijing Wawa (Beijing Doll), a chick lit autobiographical narrative, I show how different strategies used in transferring paratextual elements across linguistic and cultural boundaries in these translations reflect different degrees of intercultural sensitivity and different ways of representing the Chinese Other.

Why is it important?
This paper is innovative since it takes an interdisciplinary approach combining different theoretical frameworks from literary theory, translation and cultural studies. It attempts to point out the importance of paratextual elements in the process of intercultural transference and foreign culture image creation.
Perspectives
It is a very interesting approach taking a Chinese popular culture piece of literature as a case study. Its interdisciplinarity offers new insights into the role of the editor within the poly system theory, as well as the importance of paratexts in the presentation of a work of literature.
