As the author of this research, I am concerned by findings that most mental health chatbots sustained perilous conversations well past prudent referral points. While AI conversational capabilities are rising exponentially, associated safeguards are lagging. We must responsibly prioritize user protections over unchecked innovation, particularly regarding sensitive health applications. Developers and policymakers should consider mandating more rigorous testing and oversight before deployment. However, enhanced accessibility could still outweigh risks if paired with adequate safeguards. Advancing AI safety in mental healthcare remains an urgent priority as rapid technological progress continues outpacing ethical considerations.
