What is it about?

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly used medications for treating acid-related gastrointestinal conditions, but their prolonged or unnecessary use may increase the risk of adverse effects. This study assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and prescribing practices regarding PPI use among primary healthcare physicians within Emirates Health Services in the United Arab Emirates. A cross-sectional survey of 198 physicians found that most participants demonstrated good knowledge of PPIs, were aware of potential long-term risks, and reported generally appropriate prescribing practices. Physicians also expressed positive attitudes toward the rational use of these medications. However, the study found no significant association between physicians’ knowledge, attitudes, and prescribing behavior, suggesting that prescribing decisions may be influenced by factors beyond clinical knowledge alone. The findings highlight the need for system-level strategies—such as electronic prescribing support and regular review of long-term prescriptions—to promote more rational use of PPIs in primary care.

Why is it important?

Primary healthcare physicians play a key role in initiating, continuing, and reviewing PPI therapy. This study provides one of the first assessments of PPI-related knowledge, attitudes, and prescribing practices among primary healthcare physicians within Emirates Health Services. The findings can inform targeted educational initiatives, guide policy development, and support system-level interventions—such as prescribing audits and electronic decision-support tools—to promote more rational PPI use and improve patient safety in primary care.

Perspectives

As a primary care clinician and researcher, I am interested in how commonly used medications are prescribed in everyday clinical practice. Understanding real-world prescribing patterns is essential for ensuring that widely used therapies are applied safely and appropriately. In my view, improving the safe and rational use of medications requires not only education but also system-level strategies, including decision-support tools and regular medication reviews, to support clinicians in optimizing prescribing practices in primary care.
