What is it about?

These new centres are being widely used by the public, some of them do not have see their GP. This is an opportunity to increase accessibility to health promotion services (smoking cessation, weight management and alcohol intervention) for people to delay the risk of early onset of long term conditions like high blood pressure and cancers and lead longer, healthier lives

Why is it important?

To increase awareness for public to utilise these services for wider health determinants rather than just the presenting injury or illness and other walk in centres and MIAMI's to use opportunities with their presenting clients to offer wider services.

Perspectives

I am nurse who started in Primary Health Care back in Windhoek, Namibia, continued in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. When I came to UK, the role of a Primary Health Care Nurse was not easily understood, its is only recently that the role of nurse practitioner is getting more popular in this country but while frustrated by that< while reading for Public Health post graduate, I developed an interest in the prevention of disease and promotion of good health, and i strongly now believe that is where we have to invest, make it part of normal practice to talk about alcohol, weight, smoking and sexuality and people service users might reflect and bit more and know there is support as some feel its a personal self inflicted problem, it is not, we have to support and help for people to live healthier lives
