Why is it important?

The respiratory rate is now recognised as a very important part of the patients assessment. Also the first of the vital signs that will alter when a patient is becoming acutely unwell. An accurate respiratory assessment will help healthcare workers to highlight any problems with the patients breathing and take appropriate interventions. The respiratory system does not work in isolation therefore it is also an indicator of what is happening within other systems within the body.

Perspectives

Previous research and Government initiatives on Failure to Recognise and Respond to a patients vital signs has been reiterated for over 10 years. I am passionate that all healthcare workers should develop the knowledge and skills on how to perform a respiratory assessment.
