Why is it important?

There is increasing research to suggest that a lack of sleep can have significant costs for the health of adults and children alike. Even before a person becomes a patient it is necessary to understand the benefits of sleep. Understanding this material then should assist you in public health guidance work too then.

Perspectives

We live in a 24/7 world where it is difficult to secure optimum sleep. The death of the pop star Prince highlights such difficulties. Many claim that they can function on little sleep and some utilise caffeine or other substances to extend their waking day. I am concerned that we need to work more effectively with sleep as part of health promotion and this has prompted the drafting of this article.
