What is it about?

This study explored the expectations and early experiences of children’s nursing students. Four focus groups were conducted at the beginning and end of the first year of a three-year programme with students The students defined children’s nursing by the age and needs of the client group. They had expected practice experience would solely be within the acute setting and not in community settings. Developing clinical skills and confidence was important.

Why is it important?

The number of nursing students choosing to leave their programmes before qualifying remains high and understanding why this happens is important to ensure that they can be supported to continue.

Perspectives

When students have unmet or unrealistic expectations of children's nursing this may have a negative effect on their experience of the programme and therefore potentially on their decision to continue.
