Why is it important?

People with learning disabilities are know to have poorer health than the general population and is often associated with poor communication and inability to recognise signs and symptoms of health issues. Hence the importance of utilising different methods of teaching people with learning disabilities about understanding their health and feelings connected with feeling unwell.

Perspectives

In the present climate where there is much emphasis on self care it is important to understand how people with learning disabilities learn. Although people with learning disabilities engage in health promotion they may not always conceptualise the information to their own situation. By relating their feelings to their health people with learning disabilities may gain a better understanding and empower them to take some control over their own health and well being.
