What is it about?

The literature is reviewed about challenging behaviour in ED and the special needs of persons with dementia and how these are addressed. There is exploration of strategies that may help and where further research is needed.

Why is it important?

There is little published research on this topic. Healthcare staff in the emergency department are dealing with critically ill patients and their time is limited to manage challenging behaviour or provide 1 to 1 support that PWD may need. Therefore, it is good to explore this topic and start the impetus for solutions of what can help.

Perspectives

At the height of patients' illness or injury, the staff in ED are under tremendous pressure of being able to rapidly assess, diagnose and ensure patients follow correct care pathways such as being admitted to hospital or discharged under community care. Therefore, anything that can help them provide safe, effective and quality care to PWD is important to discuss, as improvements to practice can be made.
