What is it about?

We tested the idea that avocado plants with a higher chemical diversity would be better defended against consumers. However, we found no evidence in favor of such idea. When we grouped the trees based on their chemical similarity, we found some patterns for the incidence of herbivores and pathogens.

Why is it important?

We found that chemical diversity by itself might not work directly against the plant's enemies. By understanding how the chemical differentiation between individual plants is associated to their suceptibility to attackers we can take better decisions on pest management.

Perspectives

Commercially important crops like avocado are in demand of novel ways to deal with herbivores and diseases.
