Why is it important?

This journal Special Issue is important in bringing together different perspectives and approaches to the study of charms and different kinds of magical practices in various parts of Europe. The theme examines these traditions (beliefs, customs, practices, rituals) and how they change and adapt to different ways of doing things and different ways of being in the modern world.

Perspectives

I am an academically trained folklorist so I find it interesting how customs and ideas/beliefs change over time, how people attribute meaning to things and why they hold particular customs or ways of doing things to be important and beneficial to their lives. I am particularly interested in the practice of magic, "folk magic" (how ordinary people practice magic in different contexts, as well as other aspects of the practice of charming (such as written texts of charms).
