What is it about?

In this work, the Yb 3d → 2p (Yb Lα1,2) resonant X-ray emission spectrum of β-YbAlB4 was acquired using excitation energies around the Yb L3-edge, at 2K. Subsequently, the lifetime-broadening-suppressed (LBS) X-ray absorption structure (XAS) spectrum was obtained using the SIM-RIXS program.

Why is it important?

For an exotic superconductor, b-YbAlB4, its Yb valence number was critically assessed by using newly obtained LBS-XAS data.

Perspectives

By this work, LBS-XAS has been shown to be a powerful tool for determining valence values of heavy fermion compounds.
