We examined the language elements of reflective essays and revealed several themes that tracked to strong themes of physician identity development and strengthening/ development of empathy

Why is it important?
Empathy is important to patient experience and improves patient outcomes. It also may help prevent physician burnout.
Perspectives
Not only is it important to offer students key experiences to help them develop empathy and empathic response. It is vital to teach them how to use reflection to "hang onto" that experience long term
