What is it about?

This study looks at how MOOC technology, such as Coursera or edX, can be used to deliver a non-clinical elective course for 4th year medical students in the USA. This study compares student ratings of the course before and after transition to a MOOC. There are no differences in ratings of the course before or after transitioning to the MOOC.

Why is it important?

This is important because MOOC technology is highly flexible, allowing students to take courses where and when they want to. This can allow highly specialized courses (such as the one in this study) to reach more potential students with much lower effort than in a traditional classroom or small group session.

Perspectives

This study caused me to rethink how I deliver educational content to students. Most educators feel that face to face,. small group interactions are the most effective. This data suggests that technology mediated, self paced learning may be as effective as a small group session.
