What is it about?

Universities have a key role to play in contributing to environmental sustainability. The chapters in this volume detail the challenges faced by institutions of higher education in providing interdisciplinary answers to the complex issues of environmental health. The first part of this publication presents the fundamental challenges. The second half discusses successful university collaborations.

Why is it important?

Universities have historically generated knowledge outside specific local contexts. This book suggests a world in peril requires us to question this approach, particularly in the field of environmental sustainability. Environmental health requires interdisciplinary research to find answers to complex questions. This book presents examples of bold action and a radical spirit of scholarship

Perspectives

The challenge to university engagement in sustainability is placing curriculum and research in the context of people and planet. This book introduces a bioregional perspective allowing institutions of higher education to use their power of research and applied learning to honor the landscapes they inhabit. Regionalism is an integrative approach following a geographic focus, looking beyond political and jurisdictional boundaries. This allows for the study of social, economic and environmental issues through the creation of organizations and institutions not fitting the established framework of local, state and federal governments.
