What is it about?

The “new” elderly people are reluctant to consider retirement as a definitive exit from active life, because this phase can be a transition to a different form of active life. If ageing societies are able to create the terms that allows to valorize the contribution of retired people, the global amount of welfare con be increased. In tis perspective, retirement can be an opportunity to start or to reinforce activities that are useful to society and interesting for elderly people

Why is it important?

In western societies retirement is still considered ad an exit from active life. But the generations that are now approaching retirement hold a high level of personal and professional resources and have aspirations and attitudes very different from previous generations. So is crucial for ageing societies to find new ways to employ this resources, between market and volunteering activities.

Perspectives

I think that in modern societies the overlap between wage labor and productive work makes you forget that the work, as suggested by Jean-Baptiste Say in 1803, is producer of utility. So being able to create, within a market economy, a space to create utilities by means of the pensioners' work is a challenge that Western societies, increasingly older, must grasp quickly
