Why is it important?

Challenging questions often did not have obvious information available from which to provide a definitive answer. Our comprehensive analyses included the nature of the outbreak, global and national impact, contributing factors to the outbreak, ongoing interventions, and the US government and international response. We also provided guidance for worldwide Ebola transmission, medical countermeasures, international response challenges, lessons learned, major constraints, and future preparedness considerations.

Perspectives

We believe an assessment of these events may help an improved response for future infectious disease outbreaks with global and national security implications. When government policy decisions are made on the basis of state-of-the art science and medicine, they should have the greatest likelihood of effective disease intervention and control and ensure credibility and continuity.

Our paper provides a practical example of how sound science is applied to military and US government officials and decision makers in an operational context. During Ebola Outbreak 2014, DTRA Technical Reachback was able to provide definite medical and epidemiological answers ensuring proper operational decisions were made in a timely manner. The combined efforts of the scientific team at Technical Reachback helped contribute to the successful Ebola Outbreak 2014 response by DoD and US government.
