What is it about?
The complex semiotic status of audiovisual products has led some scholars to the assumption that interlingual subtitling is a form of intersemiotic translation. This article first tries to show that the assumption in question is theoretically untenable. Then, it seeks to outline a semiotic account of interlingual subtitling on the basis of the key role of intertextuality (both intra- and intersemiotic) in this type of audiovisual translation.

Using a concrete case, this essay tried to highlight the need for further theoretical elaboration in the field of audiovisual translation studies.
Perspectives
Blurring the sharp distinctions between concepts may seem more attractive and more promising in terms of producing creative accounts. Yet, I believe that meticulous conceptual elaboration is more creative and allows for developing more fine-grained conceptual tools.
