I wrote this piece because the autonomy question is the thread running through everything I study. In my doctoral research on servicing satellites and removing debris, I ask how a machine decides what to do next when it cannot call home for instructions. I also wanted readers to understand why the lunar South Pole is the hard case in a way that "communication delay" does not capture. A polar rover runs on a finite illumination budget. At the poles, sunrise is not a daily event; night lasts about two Earth weeks, and only a few ridges stay lit for long stretches. Every minute a rover spends idle, awaiting instructions it may never receive, is stored energy it cannot replace. CADRE is a first answer to a first question; the questions that follow are the ones that will determine whether the lunar South Pole becomes a shared workplace or a collection of strangers in the dark.
