What is it about?

This narrative review presents a revised synthesis of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and specific complications of tuberculosis during pregnancy. The management of active tuberculosis disease and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is examined separately, given the significant differences in their presentations and treatment approaches. Additionally, we explore emerging issues for women, including drug-resistant tuberculosis, postpartum considerations, and key areas for future research

Why is it important?

The article “Tuberculosis during Pregnancy: An Updated Narrative Review” is important because it addresses a clinically challenging and sometimes under-recognized condition at the intersection of infectious diseases, obstetrics, maternal health, and neonatal care. Its main contribution is to bring together evidence on the epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of tuberculosis (TB) during pregnancy and the postpartum period in a single clinically oriented review

Perspectives

One of this article's main strengths is its comprehensive, multidisciplinary perspective. Rather than focusing exclusively on diagnosis or treatment, the review connects several interdependent clinical questions: - How pregnancy-related physiological and immunological changes may influence TB susceptibility and presentation. - How to investigate suspected TB while appropriately considering maternal and fetal safety. - How to select treatment for drug-susceptible and drug-resistant TB. - How to balance the risks of latent TB infection against the potential harms of preventive treatment. - How to manage the mother and newborn after delivery.
