What is it about?

Iron toxicity is one of the serious problem for paddy rice cultivation. Characteristic of susceptible lines was early root senescence. Those of torelable lines was a long maturity period as well as the maintenance of root activity during the late stage of growth.

Why is it important?

The lines selected in green house did not perform the activity of Fe-torelance under the field condition. Presumably, they might have been selected simply because of a better growth in eraly stage of solution culture. The ratios of yields (Iloilo as Fe-toxicity / IRRI as nomal) was 70-80% in torelable lines and <50% in susceptible lines.

Perspectives

This was a study with the collaboration of breeder and soil scientist. The torelable lines selected in green house do not always perform its activity under field conditions.
