What is it about?

Stance in academic writing has been discussed extensively within the fields of discourse analysis and pragmatics. Certain linguistic elements are said to indicate stance: hedges, boosters, attitude markers, and self-mentions. This paper studies two scientific texts written by a male and a female author to detect possible differences in the way they present themselves or give their opinions in texts from the Coruña Corpus.

Why is it important?

We here demonstrate that, although corpus linguistics is a very potent tool, close reading is also relevant, especially so when dealing with historical texts. This paper is important as it tries to bring together corpus linguistics and philology once again.

Perspectives

Writing this article was exciting as I have collaborated with Prof. Crespo for a very long time now. We hope to have really vindicated the need for a return to text close reading.
