What is it about?

As a part of folk tradition, the folk song becomes an important field for anthropologist to study local culture. Folk song is not a monolithic category but have segmentation at the different levels such as regional, linguistic, ethnic and relational. It also an imperative source of livingness of language, an imaginative art expression, reflection of cultural values and transferring these knowledge to next generation through socialisation. With this background, this paper is an attempt to understand Musahar folk tradition through their folk songs.

Why is it important?

Folk songs sung in different occasions and situations gives an glimpse of socio-cultural life of Musahars by reflecting at their natural resources, perception of relative deprivation, existing tension in their society, methods of social control and their world view.

Perspectives

The paper used anthropological perspective to decipher or to see beyond the folk song. More simply it attempt to view the Musahar culture from lens of their folk songs.
