Hume's irregular arguments in the Dialogues and Treatise

What is it about?

This article offers an interpretation of the argument between Philo and Cleanthes. To many of Philo's criticisms, Cleanthes seems to retreat behind the idea that the design argument is too forceful to be doubted. In the end, Philo seems to accept this reasoning. This article aims to show that Cleanthes is making use of an 'irregular argument,' that Hume lays the groundwork for in the Treatise.
