What is it about?
This paper critically examines the basis of the diverse ethnic grouping in Nigeria. The pilot question used in the assessment is whether an ethnic group is a natural entity that exists as part of the structure of the world or ethnic group is socially construed by human beings in order to preserve or protect personal or collective interests. The paper situates answers to this question within two prominent metaphysical positions: naturalism and constructionism. On the basis of these metaphysical positions, it coined the notion of ethnic naturalism and ethnic constructionism. Finally, the paper defends the plausibility of ethnic naturalism and critically analyses the implications of this conclusion in an ethnically pluralized and diversified Nigeria.

Why is it important?
Nigeria is a multi-ethnic country with diverse ethnic groupings. One question that is rarely asked is how did these groupings come to be? This paper attempts to provide an answer to the question.
Perspectives
The paper is an important contribution to discourse in African social and political philosophy. It helps to pigeon hole ethnic rationale within the context of metaphysical positions.
